All I know is that the first four episodes somewhat mirror that show. But - man - when it falters, it's super frustrating. And Mad Dogs "the series" still has a lot of that working for it. It was a great piece of suspense and drama. The way Milo grew more and more hostile to the friends who he himself invited down for a visit.

And now having seen all 10, an argument can be made that the initial set up - the pilot - is the best of the bunch. original didn't have more than one episode, but it didn't have 10 right out of the gate.

Back then though, I did wonder how the show would sustain itself for a full season. I liked it a bunch (my review here, if you're interested).

series from The Shield's Shawn Ryan and original Mad Dogs creator Cris Cole.

  • OAR and Dispatch on Pandora (OK – one explanation, I listened to my OAR station on Pandora for the first two months while writing Mad Dogs, so the whole station is on the soundtrack. So as you might recall, last January, Amazon released their new pilot for Mad Dogs - a U.S.
  • So there may be a Soundtrack Side B post later on. These are just some really amazing songs.Īnd, the soundtrack will continue to grow as I continue the revisions, as these characters become more and more alive to me, as their world becomes more and more real. It’s difficult for me, and since I’m still in the early stages of the revision process, I don’t want to be locked into anything. I debated about whether or not I should explain them or not, and chose not to. These songs – whether I’m conscious of it at the time or not, whether it’s noticeable in the story or not – play an integral part in the story development. I kept track of the songs that made my fingers pause over the keyboard, that made me tilt my head and close my eyes and actually hear (not listen). A song came on that affected me so much, I had to stop writing all together and let the song rock my soul a little. That’s what I love, and it happened a few times while I wrote Mad Dogs. I love how songwriters, like poets, twist words around and develop phrases that have the power to make you dance or stop you dead in your tracks because, somehow, the song made your heart stop for just a moment. I listen to all kinds of music, and pretty much enjoy everything (except Taylor Swift… a topic for a different post). Somehow the music helps me define my characters, helps me establish their emotions and character traits, gives them some sort of foundation. It’s a part of their lives as much as it is a part of my life. (More opportunities for bust-a-move dance parties.)Īnd I let music influence my writing, mostly because my characters listen to music. So I choose to have music on all the time. I can handle silence, but there are very few times when I enjoy it. I turn the radio on before my coffee pot – and that speaks volumes considering how much I love and depend on coffee.īrent says I can’t handle silence – that’s not entirely true. When I first wake up in the morning, turning the radio is the first thing I do. (Remember when I thought about being a musician? I went to music school and everything.) I always have music on. I even heard of a writer (the name escapes me) who would write all his notes on a wall while he was writing the story, and then paint over it once the book was finished, giving him a fresh slate for the next project. Some writers create collages (check out to see some of her collages – they’re awesome), others put together timelines. (The soundtrack is one of the primary reasons I started the blog, actually, so it makes sense to start here.) Rather than start at the beginning or talk about why I wrote it or how I wrote it, or the plot – I’m going to focus on the Soundtrack. I have so much to talk about regarding Mad Dogs, I have to take it in stages.
